At The Bottom Of An Ocean Of Air
Also part of the Florence Museum, this site is a tribute to Evangelista Torricelli, a disciple of Galileo, who proved by experiment that
a vacuum could exist and that the atmosphere is responsible for exerting a pressure on
everything due to the weight of air. Torricelli used columns of mercury to measure pressure,
refer to our prior discussion of the units of blood pressure. Take this short tour that describes
Torricelli's experiments.
