Al-Khwarizmi - author of the first book of algebra. Click here to see a picture of the USSR stamp issued in his honor. The title of his book included the words "al-jabr" in Persian which became "algebra." The title of the book is "The Science of Reduction and Reunion". Reduction = taking things apart. Reunion = putting things back together.
